Mitch, I wouldn't be concerned about the magic eye exercise. I've got a decade of playing with such stereograms and I find the one in the manual to be harder than most to see.

One difference between the skill to see the blip page in photoreading and seeing stereograms, in my experience at least, is that stereograms are quite sensitive to the distance from your eye to the page. So while there's a range of distance I can move a book I'm photoreading that's typically a foot or more, it seems stereograms need to be within an inch or so of their "sweet spot" distance for me to see the hidden image.

If you decide you'd like to pursue stereograms, I'd suggest you go to the local bookstore or library and browse through a collection of them. Look for images that are wider and use color. A collection will also help you in starting out because even with experience some images are much easier than others to see. (A hint for the image in my photoreading manual: see if, in looking past the page, you notice an apparent difference between the depth of the center and edge portions of the image.)
