I too am interested in being able to learn educational material, especially software books, more rapidly. I got the cassette course in 2002. Preparing, previewing and reviewing has helped me a lot. Photo-reading doesn't seem to help at all.
Anyway, I do think getting a whole "picture" of the book by previewing every page causually, but quickly, and then letting that gell, and going back and reviewing it casually and quickly and getting another whole picture of the book, and then reading in great detail, parts I need (sometimes the whole book) gives me more comprehension and speed than if I just read the book from start to finish, without preparing, previewing and reviewing.
I also find I comprehend a book quicker if I can have an audio verision, or even video version of the material as well. In other words if I want to learn how to use particular type of software well, I learn it better by reading a book about it, listening to audio about it, and seeing a video of it, and hopefully taking a class or classes on it. I would like to be able to learn to use Logic Pro 7, Final Cut Stuido, Photochop, etc.
