I wish I read this post a week ago before I figured it out for myself. Still, as I learn to photoread, I am using some of the valuable techniques on reading textbooks such as surveying, trigger words and rapid reading. The rapid reading comes after I fully read the book. I decided I cannot afford to waste time trying to get photoreading to work on textbooks when I have to get studies done. I am however spending time on trying to photoread smaller, lighter material in the meantime hoping that I'll catch on. I'd love to practice reading 3-4 books a day but with full-time work and full-time school, that's just not an option right now.
