Usually, it is, "The universe and I combine together."

Chunyi Lin has used slightly different wordings
on other occasions, but they all mean (imply) the same
thing, or they do for me. I wouldn't get hung up on the
wording so long as the message is the same.

I can't answer question 1 other than to say, techniques change
over time as the teacher's experiences change.

There are probably some other answers to the questions
and someone will supply them.
