Leslie Cameron Bandler developed a process- I think it is in the book KnowHow- where she has people make a list of short term criteria and long term criteria. Then has the person compare the lists to see if there is incongruence ie: (short term) attracted to carefree people with sense of humor and (long term) someone who wants to plan a deep and meaningful future, family, home, together. This combination may lead to being disatisfied with partner who used to be fun, but now can't seem to take anything seriously.
Values elicitation is very important- discover your values, look at the ones that are most important to you- the mandatory ones that have to be there, and which ones are more like nice options. Look for a mate that has the mandatory vlaues. Personaly, I think that similar values systems are more important than common interests...
