It helps. It also makes it easier for any assignments that follow that particular class discussion. Especially if you were not specifically asked to read that section of the textbook before the class. You have a "pre-conditioned" advantage since the classroom was your second exposure to the information where everyone else heard it for the first time. The other advantage is the element of recognition. The mind is much more enthusiastic toward something it recognises as having seen or know something of before. When it's new it doesn't have the anchors for interests.

Nah, you can do it at the beginning of the semester. Just PhotoRead the textbooks daily for a couple of weeks. It helps train the flipping, getting into the ideal state and photofocus in a playful way on material that is useful for the remainder of the term or year. While it is not necessary to PhotoRead your textbook more than once it's often the most useful books you have lying around for playing with.
