Hi all,

I'm thinking of getting an ebook reading device and I'm wondering if anyone has experience with using them for photoreading.

Sony readers handle lots of formats (including pdf) but the page turning is slow. Are there any devices that are faster?

I like to read away from the computer and I also like the clearer type of the ebook readers but the slow page turning is distracting.

Please share your experiences/knowledge.

Thanks for stepping up to provide an answer, unfortunately I think you misunderstood the question. A Sony Reader is a standalone device designed for reading ebooks. It is not a Windows computer so none of the solutions that you mentioned will run on it. As far as I know, it runs only OEM software.

The Sony Reader competes with the Amazon Kindle but it can use more formats far more easily than the Kindle. The Kindle's advantage is that you can download books from Amazon wirelessly from almost anywhere that has WiFi.

There are also a couple of other products out there but they are much less common and several of them are an order of magnitude more expensive than either the Sony Reader or the Kindle.


So my question is still outstanding. Has anyone tried photoreading with these types of ebook readers?

It seems like it would be a natural fit for photoreaders because the devices are about the size of a paperback book, they have a special screen that reads more like printed type than a computer monitor (i.e., they are much easier on the eyes), and they can carry hundreds of books at a time (depending on how much memory you have.)

Edit: you can download books for the Kindle not just anywhere that has wifi but anywhere where there is a certain type of cell phone signal

Since I'm in Australia the Kindle is not available to me. Unfortunately I've not come across a device that impressed me enough to put the money up. Right now for portability I'm using the eee PC which does have the software and speed to handle variety of e-books. However not the screen setting of the "Star Trek" style of readers.
