For list that need to be in order use the Anchorman list.
Otherwise the list can be fun to create for a topic titled "vision processes" "brain processes" parts of the brain, functions of the brain whatever kicks your fancy.

When doing the ABC list on a "Subject" the aim is to have something for each letter of the Alphabet which causes you to look at a subject in more detail and think more about it. Make sure you get something for at least 20 letters otherwise you are better off linking it to the anchorman list so you are reminded of how many items you need to recall.
If you use the ABC list the R is your cue and on that list the word would be "rhodopsine".
Rhyme or wordes from any other list would not come into play. Adding more to link it, is part of Intelligence Gap management. If you go down the list recalling all your keywords during piggy bank time and get to a letter where the keyword does not come back easily, do Intelligence Gap managment and anchor the thought, the example you gave would work well for intelligence gap management. Since R is the 17th letter I would link it to the number 17 drawing from the anchorman list in this instance. In your example "rhodopsine" would be connect then to the number 17, the word cue from the anchorman list as well.
That way way if you get stuck you only need to think R? 17? achorman cue for 17? and you start pulling on the threads you created for the item you placed at R
