Direct learning is most successful in areas where you can activate the internal information by taking action.

You have the behaviours but not the conscious memory of "how" you acquired the behaviour.

It also seems to work best when you already have related information in your memory web. EG improving chess, you already know how to play chess, improved management skills, you are already in a postition where you apply management skills.

It's a poor way to learn things like formulas, step by step instructions if you have to correctly demonstrate a memory of them.

Direct learning adds focus to that small flashlight beam too. Like loading it with a magnet to direct your mind to the outcome you desire.
