The principle 'preview' is a connecting also to the book in question. So, for that handle the book and give yourself 'permission' to master it forthwith.

Take a clear and purposeful breath and casually scan the Table of Contents, or preface and ending matter.

Next, PhotoRead the 'entire' volume at one sitting. After a good sleep go through the activation sequence of your liking, like dip, skim etc. Again do the entire book at one setting. Should take same amount time as the first part.

Again, after another good sleep, pick the book up going through it by dipping out where ever you will be tested for next. One time prior to test, as close as possible. If not close then repeat deep dipping step hours before exam.

Stay involved in class discussion on said topic; get involved in discussion outside of class on said topic. The more you talk about it the better.

When you tackle the exam, that is when you wholly rely on 'intuitive knowing'. You will understand by this trial the truth of where you are at.

Repeat often and you will steadily improve.
