It must be that time/space warp you've just stepped into.
When you compass needle stops spinning, it will (unless interfered with by something), be pointing North. Turn the black bezel (assuming your got one with the gold or diamond addition of the course), so that N on the bezel and the floating compass needle's red point with the white dot, align. While holding it there, your W and E directions should be accurate.
