I discovered PRing several years ago and am now striving to master it through proper activation. My probing questions tend to be rather high-level and analytical. For example, I am having a go at the book "At the Highest Levels" by Michael Beschloss, which is a history of the 88-92 period of relations between Bush 41 and Gorbachev, Scowcroft and Shevardnadze, and the whole story of how perestroika came to pass. When I think about the questions I'd like answers to, I tend to think of matters that would be the result of a good deal of background knowledge, e.g., What circumstances led the Russians to seek peace with the West? How did the US reach out to Russia as things progressed?

The other thing I do is to identify questions that are obviously answered in the text, almost as if I were a teacher trying to make reading comprehension quiz questions.

So, how do I bridge the gap, between questions that are too sophisticated and those that are too limited in scope?

Purpose. What do you plan to do with the information. Sometimes you need sophisticated and detailed information. Most often not. So, where do you plan to use it?
