Thanks. You managed to sum up what I've been feeling but haven't been able to put into words.

I can relate to your post. I even went through a 'cutting' phase as a teenager for a bit. 'Did not have an easy life, but I'm trying to make a good one now.

Anyway, I am going to college to be a teacher, and have a problem with social anxiety. I have found whenever I listen to the 'Relationships' paraliminal tape regularily, my anxiety is reduced considerably, and I feel more comfortable with people, and they seem to with me. I almost decided to change my professional goal because doing presentations made me sick with fear, but the 'anxiety free' tape gets me through with a reasonable amount of anxiety. Good luck!

You might be interested in www.sensitiveperson.com. It is for highly sensitive people who have a hard time being around others. There is a forum too and you will find many there who have social anxiety.

Hi Lynn,
I found listening to self-esteem supercharger for a month really helped with being anxious around other people - I don't know if you've tried this already? Good luck!! It's really nice to hear from someone who can relate to me.

My advice to you is stop feeling sorry for yourself, and start living your life. I don't mean to rude; but the only reason you don't have the life you want is because of the stories that you keep telling yourself.

Go back into some part of your life that is was pretty difficult for you in the beginning but now it’s a piece of cake because you mastered it. (you first learn to crawl, then walk, and finally run)

We have all had inferior personalities at some point in our lives, that's just part of being human. Living involves taking risks, you can't win the game of life by standing at the sidelines. We all have the fear of being rejected by people; but the worst case scenario is they say no. Now are you going to end your life because of that?

A great book that precedes all these gurus is "Psycho-Cybernetics" By Maxwell Maltz. A phenomenal book about a plastic surgeon that discovered people who had plastic surgery still felt horrible inside, until they changed their perceptions of themselves. It takes about 21 days to change your old beliefs, reason being it takes about 3 weeks to feel acclimated in a new house to start feeling comfortable with your new self. Get this book and you won't regret it. It makes you chance your psychology. Another a great book is Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill. They have updated versions but don’t get those they are absolutely horrendous; stick to the original and you won’t go wrong.

Get a journal and write down 5 goals that you want to accomplish in the next 12 weeks and why. Then write down how you’re going to accomplish them, and what’s going to prevent you from attaining them. Read it every morning and every evening until it’s innate in your mind. It’s also a great way to track your progress and see what’s working for you, and maybe what isn’t so you can always change it if need be. It does wonders you won’t believe; It’s the little raindrops everyday that fill the bucket to the top. So work on what you want little by little everyday until you have mastered it or attained it. A Harvard study concluded that some 4 % of students that wrote down their life goals were more successful than the other 96 % combined

Now why would you ever feel stupid around people; are you hanging around rocket scientists? Remember this, nobody is ever better than you, ever! Some people might be better educated or know different things, but in time you can learn those if that's what you aspire for. And, is always going to be some people that just don’t like you—that’s a part of life; when you stop worrying about what others think about you, you start living and your whole existence changes.

In conclusion live with by this motto:
Watch your thoughts; they become your words.
Watch your words; they become your actions.
Watch your actions; they become your habits.
Watch your habits; they become your character.
Watch your character; it becomes your destiny!

Thanks for the last reply. While I don't think the approach to "stop feeling sorry for myself and start living my life" would have been approprate in the past when my self esteem was at it's lowest, I do think that now this may be the best option. I totally about your view that we've all had inferior personalities and how we can change - when I think of how I was last year and what I feel like now it's amazing.
Incidentally, every week I set aside an hour to wrtie down experiences from the past - describing the bullying and lonliness as well as the good things. I then listened to New History Generator. This seems to have done wonders - I now feel much more calm and in control and without the constant paranoia. I also realised one key feeling from the past, of being very lonely and feeling such a failure because of this, and my fear of reuturning to this. It seems this caused my depression and everything after. Now I've realised this, and that it is as silly as any other phobia, all those negative feelings have practically disappeared.

Hey man, its great to see you're doing better. I was looking through the archives one time trying to find some info. on something and I remember seeing your post about you being depressed and stuff, I'm glad you're doing better! You know, you'd be suprised how many people are simply afraid of saying dumb things or not looking cool in ways that will get them approval from other folks. Most likely you're surrounded by these individuals at your school. And I likely think that you don't say dumb things but I do know that when you've suffered from lonliness(as I have believe me)and you finally start to talk to folks you can get in the habit of "rushing through" conversations or actively altering how you say things, or while you're talking trying to pick apart everyone's little reaction of what you're saying and how you're saying it. Thats just not natural, when you're being your natural self things will flow for you, and the folks that still don't like you, hey that just shows how they're spiritually limited, half the time I find that some folks don't like me because they have a "model" in their head of whats cool and whats not, and it that doesn't match reality, don't give that thought any evergy, focus on what you want and make sure it's coming from your "core" and not from a place of wanting approval. I used to think everyone was just so happy and together and then I felt like the last man on earth because I didn't have it together. Well chances are you're gonna find you true self and then some other guy that sitting next to you in class may look at you and think "man, that guy is so together, he's probably never had hard times like me". So be open to your infinite potential, the human spirit is who you are not the stuggling person image that we may have bought into in the past.
Hey if you get a chance, (I'm not a guru or anything just a guy who made it through my own stuff) check out these books and stuff. I've read some and done research on others which I'll get when I get my check.
The power of now

Also check TheAmt.com about Energy Psychology/Healing(which is not mystical babble it combined accupressure with focusing on your feeling/thought, affirming, and intention. Now being confirmed and used by nurses and real psychologists)
In that same relm an energy psychology called EFT(EmotionalFreedomTechniuque) will literally zap resistance, negativity, you name it. Emofree.com
Then EFT on video for about 24 bucks: "Getting through to your emotions with EFT"(amazon.com) is an excellent resource.

I'm sure your doing great but I just felt like displaying some options if you were wondering. Peace.

It's so true - I did used to look at every reaction to try to guage "how well I'd done" or whether I'd mucked up again. And the rest was absolutely accurate too. It's so good to hear from people who know what it feels like. Thank you for your support - and for the recomendations on what to read etc. I'll try to have a look at them all - I've got a lot of holiday ahead of me so I've got plenty of time to explore it further.
