Hi Susan. Whenever I use the dowsing rods or the pendulum, I simply remind myself to be a clean conduit. That is letting go of everything and remaining as open as possible.
I'm reminded of Paul Scheele's distinctions between expectations and expectancy.
Expectations means I expect things to show up in a particular way and if it doesn't - IT doesn't work - or I don't work - or don't know what I'm doing, etc. Old programming is what that amounts to and everyone has it. Let it go.
Expectancy means, "I don't know what's coming, but I know that it IS coming and I'm hanging out to have the experience!"
Just like with PhotoReading, as Paul says, "You can't try hard and make this work. You have to relax and have fun." Make a game of it without any expectations at all. Be playful and above all, be a clean conduit. To empty the mind is the work for all of us.
Give yourself appreciation for being in the game and working it, and for even asking for tips in the forum. You are wonderful and You already are a clean conduit. Know that in your heart of hearts. Just let go and keep doing the thing. And above all else, have fun!
