Hi, I'm student and I need to study some books. So I've photoread them, but now I can't activate them! I've tried to ask me, but I've don't found the answer. I'm not defeated and I want to retain mostly knowledges in my brain. What's the problem? What I'm doing wrong?

I've review my purposes. I think they are goods. Firstly, before to begin to fotoread, I stablish it. I'm not choose only one purpose, I try to think in some of them. For example, when I study English, I say: "Improve my English" and "Discover more words". When I want to study Philosophy, I say: "Understand Kant's philosophy", "Familiarizate with Kant's period" or "Enlarge my knowleges and exercitate my mind". History is the subject than concerns me most. When I study it, I stablish the next purposes: "Know the way of thinking on this period", "Structure in my mind the events that happened on this period" or "Understand how this people thinking and acting and why".

All this is very important for me, but there are another problem: mandatory reading books. There are a lot of books that teachers want to we read in a few time. For example, I've to read 5 books every 2 months. Obviously, I have to study, too! And I've to do exams about this books, or do some jobs. So, I've to know all this content in detail.

I don't know if photoreading can offer this to me, but I think yes. I'm having wrong period because now, my sutdies are stressful and oppresive. Help, please!

As I already mentioned on your other post. You haven't got your purpose yet.

You've listed possible goals not your purpose.

As goals they need work as well. Make them measurable.

example "Improve my English." If you learn to spell another word in English correctly, [establish] you've done it. You've improve your English.

Finished?

Probably not. That's the problem of having a goal that isn't measurable.

I just want to point out why your purpose isn't working and therefore you will have difficulty activating.

A purpose explains to someone why you are doing something. When you know why you're doing something you have a way to tell when you've got what you need. Without knowing why you don't really know what you're looking for.

An example from my experience. At school the teacher would tell us to read chapter X from our geography books.

There were always kids who asked, Why. Sometimes we had teachers who just said, Because I said so. I want you to read it before the next class.

Read it most of us did. Learn from it? No. They were words on a page. One after another that didn't mean anything to us. We didn't learn anything and may as well not have read it.

Then there were teachers who said, I want you to find out about, x,y and z. So we can talk about it next class. Eureka! There was a purpose "so we can talk about x, y and z next class." We knew what we needed and what we were going to do with it.

Those classes we were ahead. We had a purpose. So we can...

Unfortunately teachers don't give us a purpose. We need to work one out for ourselves. First place to look is why are you doing this course? What do you hope to do with the information in the future. From there you can work out your purpose.

When I photoread my textbooks (on-screen at present, so it is fun to see how fast I can scroll through the pages while keeping a steady rhythm - although having fun while trying may also help with absorbing the information) I set up a purpose that is along the following lines:

"I desire the information in [these textbooks] so that I can mindmap the key information contained within them and use this to complete assignment {number} and pass the exam on {date}."

I change the affirmation as I move on to the next assignment, but always state that I need the information for the exam which is in the future. Some things on the LS blog might also help here. Take a look at the following to see if they are useful to you:

Hi, Cheryl-Anne, thanks for reply my post.

I think my problem when I photoread is that I can't activate. At the beginning I thought it was because I can't diverge my eyes, but it wasn't. Then, I thought the problem was my purpose. My main problem, I think, is I don't speak English and I can't buy Learning Strategies products in English, because I don't understand it enough. Therefore, I have many doubts. I've tried to photoread many things, such as the bilingual dictionary or my textbooks. I've photoread music scores and theoretical treatise music, too. I've tried with normal books, whit their plot and characters, and no results.

In your opinion, what should I do?

Don't learn PhotoReading on your textbooks. Use a book of about 250 pages and apply the 5 day test from the PhotoReading book.

At the least you need the PhotoReading book to learn PhotoReading.
