Hi Stweet.

It seems that your purpose is missing the so that I can do so part of the purpose. Your purpose is vague and too broad. Three things on purpose be real clear on what you want, be very specific on your purpose and also include so that I can such and such. Remember is is very important to include the why of the purpose.

Hi again Stweet.

Why would you want to activate a quiz book?

Why would you want to activate a conceptual dictionary?

What would you do with information from a quiz book?

What would you do with information from a conceptual dictionary?

Okay, after reconsideration, this is what I came up with-

I need to activate a conceptual dictionary of finance. I have three different purposes.

Purpose 1
- To understand the concepts in finance so that I can manage my personal and professional finance more effectively.

what I would do with the concepts? - I would use them to assist me in my financial management and understand how various financial functions affect me and my environment.
__________________

Purpose 2 - To learn the concepts in finance from this conceptual dictionary so that I can answer the related questions in tests successfully.

What I would do with the information? - I would learn and understand it so that I ace the tests, I would relate financial terms and glossary to my own examples for better understanding.
___________________

Purpose 3
- To activate the dictionary of finance so that I can find what I need and whenever I need from the dictionary.

What I would do with the information - I want to understand the concepts in the dictionary and also where can I find them, so that I can refer it to others to see it themselves.

Concept. to get a concept of a book Read the Table of Content. Done. That's a concept.

concept
ˈkɒnsɛpt/
noun
noun: concept; plural noun: concepts

an abstract idea.

If you're not able to answer questions in an exam I'm not surprised because you're not really clear on what you want to know. An abstract idea what a book is about... you get from previewing. And if that's all you want, you're done.

Do you really expect to ace a test with an abstract idea of a subject when others study to a level of expertise?

If you expect to know more. Then get real and quit using fancy words and look for what you really want and need to know from the book.

I need to pass an exam on subject X, What do I need to know to pass that exam... [that's what course descriptions are for. They tell you what you expect to learn]

So getting real. I need and desire to manage my finances better. What do I need to know to manage my finances better? I don't know?

Well therein lies the first purpose. To learn what I need to know about managing finance so that I can start learning what to do.

One thing I find that helps.

Hi
Sharing my view on this.

Lets look at it this way.

Purpose-1:what do you think you will get from the book.Probable answer to save and invest wisely, protect your wealth .Done. you have met your purpose.

Purpose-2:ace in test? you will need to know everything as they can ask you anything. So read everything.????

Purpose-3:so whenever you want to find what you need you will find it and understand it whenever you need it!!! simple.

So what will you do now??So far you were posing questions so its upto you to answer !

Let me ask you, what if you really wanted to read "a" book what would you do .What if you wanted to understand the book so that you use the ideas in the book practically day to day
?
What would your purpose be?Purpose is motivational.Dont analyse purpose too much ,does your purpose help you to get around your book. How do you know,if you are not frustrated with your activation then you have a good purpose---thats my way of seeing it.

Let me explain:
Suppose you need to do 20 activation sessions to know a book and you do it and you are not frustrated ----now thats great thats a yardstick that you want to know cause you want to know!!!

At the same time you activate a book once and you get an idea what the book is about and you are done and look at your yardstick again ----no you are not frustrated cause with the given time and resources you did what you wanted then fine

now lets look at it in another way suppose you wanted to know a book at great depths and multiple activation sessions are still not getting it and you are frustrated ,now thats a good frustration what do you do?photoread multiple books on the subject, meet professionals and teachers in the subject dig ,dig for answers and get the book at last and it was worth it ---thats great you have a purpose

so dont get frustrated around whether you have a right purpose but see if your purpose helps you handle your frustration.
Its other way round---get frustrated enough to know and want to activate.

Hope you get what i am trying to convey.Use purpose to motivate to activate or not activate.Photoreading works when you have a motive---stronger the better.

Thats why you end your Photoreading session affirming"i am curious to know in how many ways my mind and body will make this information available to me"

Its about focus and motivation.

Cheers!!!

no, I didnt mean that. I dont want the 'concept' of that dictionary. I need to understand whats there in that 'conceptual dictionary.

Setting a purpose now seems a daunting task. Is it really so tough? I know my purpose inwardly but fail to put it into words.

As of now, I would set a prupose we all could find easier to agree upon. Simply putting, I want to understand the meaning of the words in this dictionary. All of them.
Purpose- To know and understand all of the words in the dictionary, so that I can produce it upon asking. Like an entertainer handing people the dictionary to ask him about any word they want him to tell the meaning of. (I cant stress upon the purpose further, this is my limit)
So, how do I use super reading, skittering and dipping now, to activate the dictionary?

Okay, now I know what I need to know to pass this exam. I need to know what these words in this conceptual dictionary mean. Now, how do I proceed activating?

Hello Adarsh,

What would I do if I wanted to read 'a' book? Well, simple. I would preview it, be curious about it, and start reading it.
Why cant I set shallow purpose of just being aware of the words and meanings in a dictionary? Why does it always need to be associated to benefits and ultimate application of the knowledge in the book!?
I wont compare photoreading with regular reading, but with regular reading you can do anything you want with the text. you can- understand, memorize or just explore it the way you want! I want to do this all with photoreading.

Leave alone the dictionary or a quiz book, I have failed to understand how do I activate any other book as well. If I fail to state my purpose, I do have lot of mind probing questions in mind. After all its mind probing questions that yield us comprehension. Dont they?

You know what the 4 month long consistent failure taught me? Our mind responds to only what it finds interesting and meaningful. When initial 5-6 passes dont give you any comprehension, what amount of desire would you have left to activate that book further? Zero!
This is how frustration builds!

You have always encouraged me. I am utilizing my experience and building on it. Also keeping a diary with nearly 500 questions answers on Photoreading. Will complete it and post them all here for newbies after my breakthrough and personal experience with activation. Failure is really very painful at times!

It sounds like you want to development a photographic memory which photoreading is not.

Also you have an unreasonable expectation.

I mentioned this before I will mention it again the conscious mind can handle only so much information 6 to 8 bits at a time before it gets overwhelmed.

It sounds like you want to memorize the whole dictionary which photoreading is not.

I believe Alex and Adarsh have already given you great advice to help you succeed in Photoreading but if you have chosen to dismiss or ignore their advice that could be a problem.

As I shared with you earlier you have gotten feedback. What you have done has not served you well. You are not getting the results you want.

I also asked you if you know what you want if you know what you want to get from the book you say you do and you have extracted information you just haven't extracted information using photoreading.

Well if choose not to accept Alex or Adarsh's advice that is your call but as I shared with you earlier to keep doing the same thing over and over again that has not worked is a definition of insanity.

You have gotten feedback while you may not agree with Alex on everything I would really listen to her and to Adarsh as well he really gets it he hit the nail on top of the head when he shared it is all about mind probe and questions and purpose and knowing what you want from a book.

To have 100% comprehendsion of a dictionary is an unreasonable expectation and again photoreading is not about developing a photographic memory which it seems like to me what you are trying to do.

Stweet,

Your so called shallow purpose doesn't really sound like a purpose. So you just want to get rid of advanced reading techniques and strategies and employ ineffective, inefficient elementary reading You want to get it all on the first past.

Remember in the Photoreading book Paul Scheele discusses why the elementary reading is ineffective.

Hello Stweet,

From the Photoreading book 4th edition Chapter 7 Activate
page 52.

"Activation after Photoreading is quite different than trying to recall what you read in a regular manner. Activation techniques are designed to restimulate the new neural connection you created by Photoreading, rather than trying to force recall through the critical/logical conscious mind.""

"You must be active and purposeful to gain conscious comprehension. During activation you find text relevant to your purpose. When you have no purpose for reading a document, generally little benefit can be gained from activation".

I remind you what Alex had shared earlier about never wanting to merely recall information from a book.

I will share an example with you. Attorneys have volumes and volumes and volumes of books pertaining to various laws. They do not go and memorize all these volumes they just find the particular statue or law that pertains to their case.

Is it really practical or even beneficial to you to memorize a dictionary. What is the point of that? What can be gained from that? Is it a wise use of your time and resources?

How many pages is this financial dictionary? How many words does it have?

Again, Photoreading is not about developing a photographic memory.

This is interesting and This is what I want to put forward. Paul also mentions something like this in 'How to read like a PhD' mp3 file shared on the website. He says, books are written so that we dont need to remember the information (giggles).

So, How will one be able to find what she wants in a thick book unless she knows all of it!

I dont want to reproduce the entire dictionary. Thats no use of me. I would want to do with that dictionary the same way as the attorney case you discussed. So now you understand my situation.

In my opinion, photographic recall doesnt guarantee you comprehension. Its a powerful visual recall. So its not my purpose. To locate what I want from the dictionary is what my purpose is, and I believe, to be able to locate all of the words, I would need it all in my brain.

Alex's points about recall and memory are very true. But how do I add those thousands of words in the dictionary to my memory web!!? they arent going to get added automatically with photoreading! I will have to make thousands of associations consciously to attach them to what I already know!
This is where comes handy a photographic recall. But as it is mentioned many times that photoreading isnt about developing photographic memory, this option rules out. This is another stuck state!

I never mentioned I want to memorize it. I want to know it all. all of the words in it. This will increase knowledge and vocabulary. You would find financial material making much more sense since you know the words now. You know the synonyms, antonyms, you can spot an error or mistake, you can use them in your writing, it is also useful in higher studies etc... I apologize if this is too much to read, but I need to be precise.

Dictionary of financial terms, around 300-400 pages, almost 5005-6000 words.

Thank you,
Stweet
