I started with ideomotoric signaling in hypnosis, which may be why I believe it is consious/subconsious communication. Some people give it other explanations...
If you want to learn, there are dowsing groups you could join, but there is also a cute little book called "the pendulum kit" available at new age and alternative bookstores. It is a reasonable way to explore the art. (I often use a necklace or even a rubber band with a paperclip on it!) Almost anything will do, but the little book can give you training and guidance on structuring questions and calibrating responses.
A popular game among women is to dangle a threaded needle over a pregnant friends abdomen, and ask if it is a boy or girl...they get mixed results, because they don't practice seriously, but it is still dowsing!
