Im all confused about using the compass. It doesnt seem to point to the right direction. I know where north and south are, but the compass is pointing in different directions. Can i go by my own knowledge of direction? Or was there something that I missed? Does direction change based on where your door is to each room?

Thank you to everyone who responds!

Hi Liana

Not sure if I can help. Make sure there are no metal objects around. Take the reading from a few different points to ensure you are getting an accurate reading. Have you allowed for declination? Remember, a compass points to magnetic north, not true north.

Hope this helps.

Hi nlac,
What is declination? So, then i should feng shui based on magnetic directions? That makes more sense based on what this feng shui lady did in my room. Thank you so much for responding! Have a beautiful day!!

Hi Liana,

Magnetic North and true North are not the same. My partner is a physics teacher and he can explain it better than I can! There is an angular deviation on your compass between magnetic North (which the compass points to) and true North. For example: I live in Melbourne Australia and the declination here is 11 degrees East. So I take the reading and rotate the compass 11 degrees East! to get the true reading. Does this make sense? I Googled (got to love them!) for declination of Melbourne, had to search a bit, but found it quite easily.

Hope this helps you some more.

HI Liana

Just doing a bit more reading and found that declination doesn't need to be used. Just read and trust that the compass you're using is pointing to magnetic North.

cheers

Hi Liana, I live in Sydney. Don't change your directions to allow for the 11 degrees cause you are suppose to use magnetic north.
