I'm afraid to sound off-topic but I'd like to hear comments (esp. from those who were successful on cutting on sleep)on the quoted statement below.

"By cutting down on sleep we learn less, we develop less, we are less bright, we make worse decisions, we accomplish less, we are less productive, we are more prone to errors, and we undermine our true intellectual potential!"

I've been sleeping only about a few hours daily for a few days. I'm confused.

Duh dude you are sleep deprived. Go get some sleep.. sheesh. Btw, you've probably acquired a deficit that will take a long time to recover.

There are people who can sleep very little but this is NATURAL for them. It is nothing special. There is also a drug the military has that might be useful but good luck on getting it.

Meditators may be able to improve sleep or reduce the need to sleep by attaining a more reflective state the entire day and also altering their brain wave frequencies.

It helps to do progressive or focused relaxation before going to sleep or while in bed too to fall asleep more rapidly.

Sheesh.. you better get some sleep or you are going to feel worse and worse.

I'd say not sleep for 4days straight. Max your brain out and give it some pain. Then you can truely appreciate sleep.

The longest I've gone without sleep is for 25-26 hours. Everyone has a different required amount. If you feel perfectly comfortable with just a few hours, this means your body has naturally adjusted to give yourself more REM time, and less time with normal sleep. If you force your body to have 5 hours, when you're coming from 8, then it will eventually adjust, generating more REM in a shorter period.

Without REM, you basically explode.

Could you refresh me about REM time?
Until you become naturally adjusted on sleeping less, any advice on how to minimize possible side-effects like drowsiness or dizziness?

Meditate or get proper sleep. Your mind and body need time to recharge. One of the principle reasons for sleep is so that your body has time to eliminate/reduce the affects of daily stress on the system.

If you feel drowsy and tired it's time to sleep. You get much more work done with a refreshed mind and body.

I would recommend just finding a way to get proper sleep, like Alex just said.

But if that's no good for you, then I'd advise to just exercise a little bit more and drink plenty of water while trying to adjust. If you're really interested in boosting more REM in a shorter period, you can check out the Polyphasic Sleep topic, located here:
