I'm a casual fan of some anime. I was introduced to epic japanese storytelling 10 years ago when I read "Dragon Sword, Wind Child" (I just checked out this book on amazon, and found the copy I have is selling for $180!). The dichotomy between good and evil that dictates much of Western literature isn't so straightforward in a lot of the really good japanese animes and stories. It's just not as simple as black and white, dark vs. light, good vs. bad, and I think that's the way it is in real life as well.
My enjoyment of anime started with Miyazaki's Princess Mononoke, which is a great example of the kinds of complex relationships characters form. Serial Experiments: Lain was the first series I really got into and enjoyed, and I recommend that to anyone! Cowboy Bebop is what I've been watching most recently, which, although definately not as complex as Lain, is a good one if you have a fondness for cyberpunk. Great music!
Some animes I started watching/watched but didn't like are Evangelion, DBZ, and Akira(I know, I know, I just couldn't take all the "anime screams". I'm an auditory person and they were just too distracting).
Chang, I haven't seen Gundam Wing yet, although I've heard a lot of people are into it. Have you seen Lain or Bebop? And also, what draws you towards anime? (pun intended
