Soft-focusing on those blank spaces seems to help me absorb only blank spaces. When I activate, I get nothing. When I Photoread a book, I would say I'm comprehending none of it. Any ideas?

Activating is bringing the information to a conscious level. No, you're not going to consciously know any of it right after the PhotoReading step. I don't think you understand how the system works.

The PhotoReading step takes the text into your long term memory, at a subconscious level. This means that you do know it, just not consciously. Your mind is constantly sorting out things around you, and as it's doing so, it can't make you consciously aware of every single tiny thing that it picks up. The subconscious can focus on up to 20,000 things at once, where as your conscious, normal, waking state is only able to do about 7 things at once. Activating uses the fact that it's in your subconscious to accelerate the process, merely bringing already-existing knowledge, into your conscious awareness.

Can you describe the book in one sentence? If yes, that's more than 0%. If no, you really need to do more previewing.

In order to PhotoRead a book, you need three things:

1.) The ability to state what the book is about in one sentence
2.) A reason, vis-a-vis purpose, for PhotoReading the book
3.) The book.

What are you doing to activate. Perhaps you could give us an example of your mind probing questions. It will be a lot easier to give you some suggestions on how to activate better if you tell us what you are already doing
