The sound cancelling headphones used for airline travel are closed and handle high fidelity audio. Bose and Sennheiser make these headphones - you could try them.

I posted on a disney board looking for the type they used in EPCOT. You wore them, and a couple characters gave you a sound-effect haircut. You felt like you were getting a hair cut, blow dry, etc. So far. I haven't found out the type. It was years ago, and don't think they seemed extraordinarily expensive, just superior. Tell me what they were!

I'm using the Sony MDR-V700 phones and like them a lot... the V900's, which i will be getting soon, eliminate almost all outside sound. You get a huge range of sound as well so that you can benefit greatly from things like Holosync as well... it is my opinion that quality headphones are mandatory!

My way of blocking out all outside noises whilst listening to paraliminals and other self help tapes is to wear ear plugs in my ears, then slip on my headphones, then turn up the volume a bit...and voila! Virtually all outside noises are blocked out and yet I can hear the paraliminal perfectly. It really is very effective, and is much less costly than buying noise cancelling headphones.

I buy my earplugs from shops selling motorbike equipment (they recommend you wear earplugs whilst on a bike because it can get very loud) and they work out very cheap.

Try it and see what you think.
