It seems to me that inhaling through the nose and exhaling through the mouth works better for me that using the nose both in inhale and exhale. Does Master Chunyi Lin say something about exhaling through the mouth?

Yup.


In through the nose, out through the mouth is fine for the first three preparatory breaths before doing your exercises/meditation, but then switch to the nose-nose. I'm not remembering specifics, but I believe it's something about losing too much energy with constant nose-mouth.
