I started out looking just above the book also. I'm now to the point where I can look close to the middle of the book. I'm not sure how much difference it makes, as long as you can get both pages in your peripheral vision. Looking at the center, I get more of a sense of the letters "coming at me."

Where I have trouble is if there is text on only one of the pages...
