I imagine it would depend on the bed itself, but I would muscle test to see which would be preferable. You might also take into consideration what would be more supportive of your fortune element.
One other thing to be aware of with a metal bed is that it's really important to double check the facing direction of the head of the bed once it is in place. The metal can cause the compass reading to be far different than you would expect.
